It’s used to lubricate all of the moving parts inside your engine and can affect the efficiency and length of life of your vehicle. While many engines will use less than a quart of oil between changes, others can consume as much as a quart every 600 to 700 miles. Less frequent oil changes on newer engines make it essential that you check the oil level monthly and top it up as needed. If you change your own oil, you can reset the system by following the instructions in the vehicle owner's manual. Whenever you have your car's oil changed, the service technician should reset the oil-life monitoring system. In fact, the owner's and maintenance manuals for many newer cars eliminate "severe service" recommendations altogether because the oil-life monitoring system automatically shortens the oil change interval when it detects heavy-duty operation. Early simple systems are time and mileage based, but current advanced designs analyze actual vehicle operating conditions to identify when the oil will begin to degrade. Most newer cars are equipped with oil-life monitoring systems that automatically determine when an oil change is needed and notify you with an alert on the instrument panel. Moreover, if your car's engine requires full-synthetic motor oil, it might go as far as 15,000 miles between services! You cannot judge engine oil condition by color, so follow the factory maintenance schedule for oil changes. It used to be normal to change the oil every 3,000 miles, but with modern lubricants most engines today have recommended oil change intervals of 5,000 to 7,500 miles. These requirements are detailed in your vehicle owner's manual, and your auto repair shop can provide information on your vehicle’s recommended oil specifications as well.ĭepending on vehicle age, type of oil and driving conditions, oil change intervals will vary. The proper oil for your make and model of vehicle must have the correct SAE viscosity grade, meet performance standards set by the API, ILSAC and/or ACEA, and comply with any unique specifications established by the automaker or engine manufacturer. However, choosing the right oil is not always easy. Most late-model cars require synthetic-blend or full-synthetic, low-viscosity, multi-grade, resource-conserving oils that minimize friction and maximize fuel economy. ![]() ![]() ![]() If you’re interested, I’d say check them both out. Post them below or e-mail us!īe sure to check us out on Twitter and the CNET Mac forums. If you're interested in running Mac OS X, but you don't want to pay ridiculous prices for a normal Mac, then a Hackintosh just might be for you. Some systems like the first Intel-based Mac Pro can technically be upgraded to have graphics that ought to run OS X Mountain Lion, but as mentioned above these systems are also limited by their 32-bit EFI firmware. Additionally, some dedicated GPUs such as the ATI Radeon X1900 and Nvidia Geforce 7300 do not appear to meet the requirements. That includes a number of Mac Mini, MacBook Air, and MacBook models that relied solely on the Intel GMA 950 and X3100 without a dedicated GPU. Unfortunately, some of the systems that do contain both 64-bit CPUs and 64-bit EFI firmware don't meet Mountain Lion's graphics requirements. As a result, systems without the GPU capabilities required by these APIs would likely run into severe slowdowns. Mountain Lion supports new graphics APIs for OpenCL, OpenGL, and QuickTime, which means it will make far more use of the GPU than prior versions of the OS. Ars Technica speculates that some systems aren't supported because of graphics advancements in the new OS. In addition to the 64-bit issue, a second factor is a Mac's graphics capabilities. In Mountain Lion, Apple will be shipping a 64-bit kernel only, and this kernel will not boot on a system with 32-bit EFI firmware, so that's a reason these systems will not run Mountain Lion. Where to get the Office 2016 for Mac preview. How to AirPlay only audio from your Mac.Three ways to take screenshots on your Mac.This does seem a bit warped, but that's how it is. On systems with 32-bit EFI firmware, the operating system's kernel boots in 32-bit mode only, even though the system's CPUs are 64-bit capable and can run programs such as Photoshop in 64-bit mode just fine. On systems with 64-bit EFI this can be toggled from Yes to No or vice versa by holding down the 6 and 4 keys together at boot to load in 64-bit mode, or by holding the 3 and 2 keys respectively to load in 32-bit mode. On systems with 32-bit EFI such as the Mac Pro 1,1 this field will read No. Then check the line called 64-bit Kernel and Extensions to see if it says "Yes" or "No." You can see this by going to the System Profiler utility (called System Information in Lion) and selecting the Software section to the left. The kernel can load in either 32-bit or 64-bit mode on systems with 64-bit EFI firmware, but it can only load in 32-bit mode on systems with 32-bit EFI firmware. Reboot your system with the 6 and 4 keys held down simultaneously, and if this line doesn't read 'Yes' in the System Profiler then you will not be able to install OS X Mountain Lion. The last aspect of the system that is either 32-bit or 64-bit is the core software code (not hardware-based as with the firmware) in the operating system that is called the kernel. The firmware code on the Mac Pro 1,1 is 32-bit, whereas in later systems Apple switched to 64-bit code in its EFI firmware. Separate from the CPUs is the firmware, which is hardware-based code that controls details such as fans and power distribution. The CPUs are also 32-bit-compatible, so they can simultaneously run 32-bit code, which is why Safari and Photoshop in their Finder Info windows offer the option to load in 32-bit mode. The Mac Pro 1,1's CPUs are capable of 64-bit calculations, so the system can compute 64-bit code like that in Safari and Photoshop. In Mac systems there are multiple aspects of the system that can be either 32-bit or 64-bit, and even if a system's processor is 64-bit, other aspects of the system might not be. The tale of 32-bit versus 64-bit systems is back again with Mountain Lion, though in this new chapter the problem is not merely whether or not a system's CPUs are 64-bit capable, but extends deeper into the requirements for loading the operating system's kernel. The issue comes down to two requirements: full 64-bit support of multiple aspects of the system, and proper graphics support. After all, the difference here is not like Apple's switch to a new architecture that left PowerPC G5 systems unable to run Snow Leopard even though they were likely powerful enough to do so. Given the first Mac Pro's processing capabilities, with its multicore 64-bit-capable CPUs with plenty of RAM and advanced graphics card, it ought to be more than capable of running Mountain Lion. ![]() ![]() With the release of the Developer Preview of OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion came a list of system requirements that excludes more Intel-based Mac systems from running the new operating system, including a few models such as the first Mac Pro that seem like they should run the new OS just fine. ![]() ![]() ![]() Instead, you’ve got three distinct (but related) jobs: outfitter, world-builder, and city planner. Loop Hero has interesting and intriguing mysteries to dive into with a strategy RPG deckbuilding roguelike experience where you craft your own perils and then overcome them. On the surface, this may seem incredibly obvious, and it is – things get interesting when you’re making many of these macro and micro decisions, weaving them together, and watching how it all plays out. You’re going to take that into account when you build your deck, because you’re not going to want to stick a bunch of soulless foes in there, and you’re going to want to try to shoot for numerous, weaker living creatures in order to take advantage of the bonus. For instance, one gold card removes your armor HP bonus (which is significant!) but gives you more maximum hit points every time you kill a creature with a soul. There are also “gold cards” you can unlock and pick one of to use each run which can completely change the way you approach a challenge. Crushing legions of foes gives experience points that you can use to level up, selecting from three different choices each level that you can use with gear and carefully selected map effects to create potent builds. Just because you’re not controlling your character directly doesn’t mean you’re not making choices. The constant juggling of myriad locations and their various effects on the board state create a consistently enjoyable value proposition that’s a blast to grind and grind, even if you never actually have any real control over your champion’s attacks or defenses. On the same note, perhaps you could build a lightning temple off to the side, but with forests in your path – forests burn, you know, and it might alter their effects. Build too many, and a village of evil wooden training dummies will spawn that you hopefully have a Oblivion spell ready to destroy before you end up getting slaughtered by a stack of persnickety planks. Perhaps you enjoy building forests for an attack speed bonus. Building mountains can increase your character’s life points, but what if you stack a 3x3 grid full of them to build a towering peak? There’s a bonus for that, but it will also bring harpies to land occasionally on your loop, causing problems. There are many hidden combinations to discover that can alter the landscape. ![]() ![]() The most entertaining aspect of Loop Hero is constructing your loops for your daring adventurers to explore. While in the loop, you’re constantly faced with a value proposition each time you complete a loop around the circuit – do you cash out with the full resources you’ve collected or do you press your luck and keep going? If you do end up dying, you’re only going to get to take home thirty percent of your haul, so knowing when to call it a day and head back with a full yield is another important skill that must be learned. In fact you’re often going to lose and get sent back to your encampment with some collected resources to spend on permanent and powerful settlement upgrades, making this a roguelite instead of a roguelike for those who care about such designations. Of course, you’re not going to win every time. ![]() With a warrior, a rogue, and necromancer, there are different loop templates to tackle that come with different modifiers.
